Terms of Service

The Searchlight Study website provides you with access to information about the project, as well as enroll individuals in the study (www.searchlightstudy.org). Enrolled individuals can participant in the Searchlight study through the Searchlight study web-app (https://gtap.searchlightstudy.org) The University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA) has developed the study website. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (“CAMH”, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) developed the web-app for the study that will be used by study participants to share their data with the study team. These are the Terms of Service for the website (provided by the University of Washington) and study web- app (provided by CAMH). These Terms of Service outline the rights and responsibilities of the individuals using this service. By using the website and/or study web-app, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and will comply with the terms of this agreement. If you do not agree with any part of the Terms of Service, you may not have permission to access the service. Individual access to the use of these services is also dependent on accepting and complying with the Searchlight Study Privacy Policy found here: (https://gtap.searchlightstudy.org/privacy_policy.html)

This document outlines the policies and process of how participant information is disclosed and collected through the use of the website and/or app, as well as individual privacy rights.

Requirements for Use of these Services

1. Anyone can access the Searchlight Study website

2. You must be enrolled in the Searchlight Study and provided consent in order to access and share your search data through the Searchlight study web-app

The study website and participant web-app

The University of Washington designed and manages the study website. CAMH owns the technology framework (the code and infrastructure) of the participant app. The technology framework of the website and participant app are their intellectual property (IP). Here are rules about that IP:

  1. The study team (University of Washington or CAMH) can revoke your access to the web-app at any time for any reason and do not have to provide the user with any notice.

  2. Over time, The University of Washington or CAMH may improve the website and or web-app. This may include adding new features or deleting ones that are currently available.

  3. The University of Washington or CAMH is providing the website and the web-app. They do not make any guarantees, claims, or warranties to you about the way that the website or web-app work.

Prohibited Behaviours

Users are expected to use the website and/or web-app in a way that is compliant with the terms of use and does not constitute unacceptable conduct. Prohibited behaviors include:

  1. Misusing any part of the website or web-app

    1. Not following instructions on how to use them

    2. Using them in an unlawful manner

  2. Trying to change or delete any part of the website or web-app

    1. Removing, hiding, or changing any legal information or notices about the website or web-app

  3. Downloading any portion of the website or web-app without written permission

  4. Trying to access, download, alter or in any way misuse the study data collected through the website or web-app.

  5. Using any logos or branding found on the website or web-app without permission

Your Access to the Searchlight Study Web App

The Searchlight Study web-app is meant for individuals who have consented to participate in the Searchlight Study.

The rules for the Searchlight Study web-app are as follows:

  1. Only use the Searchlight web-app if you have consented to participate in the Searchlight Study, or with express permission.

  2. Only consented study participants are allowed to use the web-app.

    • Keep your web-app and login information private and secure.

    • If you think someone else has used your web-app without your permission, contact us at searchlight@uw.edu

  3. Only consented study participants are allowed to use the web-app.

    • CAMH does not have to give you any notice when access is revoked.

    • CAMH may delete or remove your information.

  4. CAMH can stop giving you access to the Searchlight web-app if you violate the terms of service.

    • If CAMH blocks service because you violate the terms of this agreement, you are prohibited from accessing the web-app.

  5. You can stop using or delete your account at any time.

    • Deleting the web-app is not the same as withdrawing from Searchlight Study. Deleting the web-app will only delete the data stored on your mobile device.

    • Unless you withdraw from the study and specifically request that your data be deleted, Searchlight Study researchers, and CAMH will continue to use your data. If you withdraw from the study, no new information will be collected from you via the web-app.

    • If you want to update any of the data you have provided, contact us at searchlight@uw.edu

How Searchlight Study team can use your information

Study team can see the information you share on the website and/or on the web-app. The University of Washington, CAMH and the Searchlight Study research team can use this information for limited purposes.

  • They are not allowed to sell or rent this information.

  • They are allowed to use this information to make sure that the study website and web-app work the way they are supposed to.

  • They are allowed to use this information to improve the study website and web-app.

  • They are allowed to use this information to make the study website and web-app easier to use.

  • They are allowed to use information from the Searchlight web-app for research.

If you share comments, ideas, or feedback with the University of Washington, CAMH, or affiliates about the study website and/or web-app, they can use this information any way they want to. By contacting us, you are allowing us to contact you in response.

Notifications

The University of Washington or CAMH may send you announcements, alerts, notifications or other messages about the Searchlight study website or Searchlight web-app. You can turn these on or off in settings. No matter what your account settings are, The University of Washington or CAMH may have to send you a message if it is required by law.

Accessing the study website or participant app through your cell phone

You may be able to access the study website or web-app on your cell phone. Please ensure that you are using the website or web-app safely. For example, please do not use these services while driving a car, operating machinery or performing other tasks in which using your cell phone may pose a distraction.

The University of Washington or CAMH is not responsible for cell phone data costs or text message charges.

Costs, fees, disputes

  1. The University of Washington or CAMH is not responsible for any lost profit, revenue, or data because of your decision to participate in the Searchlight Study.

  2. The University of Washington or CAMH is not responsible for financial losses or damages of any kind as a result of using the study website or web-app.

  3. If you have a dispute with the University of Washington or CAMH or any part of the study website or web-app, you promise to contact the University of Washington or CAMH and try to resolve the dispute in good faith.

  4. The University of Washington and CAMH are not liable for any issues regarding participant or other party use of the website and/or web-app if they do not work the way they expect.

Updates to these Terms of Service

The University of Washington or CAMH may update these Terms of Service. They will post any updates on this webpage. If they make major changes, they will try to directly tell study participants. For example, the University of Washington or CAMH may send you a notification or post the change. If you take part in the Searchlight Study or use the website or web-app after they update the Terms of Service, it means you agree to the updated Terms of Service.

Precautions

The Searchlight Study website and/or web-app is for research purposes only and are not intended to act as medical care, provide medical advice, or use as treatment. Please consult a healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns regarding a medical condition. Please do not use the website or web-app as a replacement for seeking a healthcare provider or receiving medical attention.
