Privacy Policy

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (“CAMH”, “we,” or “us”) is a nonprofit psychiatric teaching hospital and academic health science centre in Toronto, Ontario Canada. We have developed a Searchlight Study web application (the ”Study web-app”) to facilitate collection of online search data for Searchlight research study (the “Study”). We want to find out whether online searches (e.g. Google or YouTube searches) collected via the studyweb-app can be used to understand when someone may be at a higher risk of self-harm based on their online search. This will also inform us for whom this technology works and who might not benefit. The University of Washington developed the accompanying “Searchlight Study Website”. Your privacy is important to us. The Privacy Label gives you an overview of The University of Washington and CAMH’s privacy practices within the Searchlight Website and Searchlight Study App. To learn more, read the detailed policy linked below.

1. Information we collect

Study team can view information that you share on the Searchlight study website and/or on the web-app. We do not collect sensitive categories of data, such as personal health information. We also do not collect any passive data from your device, and will not have access to your contacts, photos or other personal information stored on your device.

2. How we use your personal information

The study web-app asks you to donate your online Google searches and optionally Youtube data. The provided search data from your Google account will be used to find any online information seeking patterns. This requires you to authorise the study web-app to collect search data from your personal Google account by following the data sharing steps highlighted in the study web-app . The study researchers never store your username, password or emails, and the web-app is programmed to only see and download the Google Takeout file from your Google drive.

3. Tracking

The Searchlight Study website and web-app do not use cookies to collect information about your interactions with the Searchlight Study website and/or app, and do not collect standard log information. We do not track your precise device location, or browsing activities on other applications on your device, and do not activate your device’s microphone and camera in order to monitor activity.

4. Use and Sharing of Data

Researchers do not sell participant personal information data to other parties, or use participant data for advertising purposes. However, we may share your de-identified aggregate information to appropriate parties described in the study consent form.

5. Communications from the Searchlight Study

Communications with the Searchlight Study through email at searchlight@uw.edu or via SMS message.

6. Privacy Tools and Controls

As a participant, you control who sees your data. Participants may ask researchers to delete their data, and researchers will delete the data you have provided upon their request. Participant data will be retained for as long as the researchers need for the study unless the participant requests for data deletion.

7. Updates to this policy

The Searchlight Study team will inform participants if changes are made to our Privacy Policy. The date last revised is at the bottom of the policy and changes will take effect immediately upon the posted revision.
